If you read my Chicken & Wild Rice Soup recipe post, you will recognize this adorable little restaurant in Branson, MO. The Sugar Leaf Bakery & Cafe is the absolute BEST sandwich & soup shop that you will ever find! When my sister & I went, we ordered the Ultimate BLT & a cup of Chicken & Wild Rice Soup that were fabulous!
So what is the big deal about a BLT you ask? Okay, it is a little more with the added turkey and pepper jack cheese, but what else can make this so good. Well let’s start with the bread. You can buy bread, but when re-creating this, we made our White Bread in a Breadmaker recipe. Nothing like homemade bread to start a sandwich right! The other thing that puts this way over the normal BLT is the mayo. While at the Sugar Leaf, we knew there was something different going on with the mayo. After sticking our finger in several times to try to dissect the flavors going on, my sister figured out a pretty close clone. It has a slightly sweet, smokey thing happening. Jan (the sister) figured out that if you added a little sugar and a good dose of liquid smoke, you could get that fabulous taste! You can buy liquid smoke in the grocery near the steak sauce and Worcestershire sauce. A regular BLT is just a sandwich, but an Ultimate BLT is phenomenal!
- Bread (homemade preferred)
- Bacon, cooked
- Turkey (I used honey roasted from deli)
- Pepper Jack cheese
- 1 cup mayonnaise
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 tablespoon liquid smoke
To make smokey mayonnaise, combine the mayo, sugar, and liquid smoke in a small bowl.
Butter outside of bread and place in skillet or on griddle at medium heat.
Slather (I like that word) smokey mayo on the inside of each piece of bread.
Place cheese next to mayo and then add turkey and bacon.
Cook until outside of bread is nicely toasted.
Add tomato and lettuce just before serving.
