Quick Garam Masala

Because I tend to be drawn to recipes with names that I cannot pronounce, I keep encountering this Indian spice blend, Garam Masala in recipes. And for a while now, I’ve just substituted cumin in its place. Spices can be expensive and this wasn’t one I was going to go out and buy. But then I went searching to see exactly what is in the mix, and it turned out I already had most of those spices on hand! Now, you can pretty easily make this by roasting your own spices and grinding them yourself and I’m sure that would taste a bit stronger. But for a quick and easy blend, here is what you’ll need.


Quick Garam Masala

Yields 1/4 cup


  • 1 tablespoon ground cumin
  • 1½ teaspoons ground coriander
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 1½ teaspoons ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg


Mix the spices in a small bowl and store in an airtight container.
