For years, I visited Jackson’s Orchard in Bowling Green, KY every fall. As I have mentioned before, I have NO sense when it comes to how much to buy when I’m getting an incredible deal. I would always check out the back room of “seconds” on apples and would come home with a couple of bushels. Then I’d be spending a lot of the next few days peeling, chopping, and preparing the apples in a variety of ways. There was the crockpot apple butter, apple crisp, and sliced apples to put in the freezer. WIth those sliced apples, I could make all kinds of yummy apple desserts or a delicious side dish like these fried apples!
Fried apples are the perfect side to serve with so many main dishes. The sweetness combined with a savory pork, chicken, or turkey are especially good. I recently mentioned my love of combining them with a spicy sausage & cabbage bake. Yes, they are pretty sweet. You can do any kind of “sweet” combination you like. I have used white sugar as well as the brown sugar and honey. I happen to have some amazing tasting home grown honey courtesy of my brother-in-law. The amount of cinnamon is totally up to your taste. I like a good sprinkle, but not overpowering.
