Homemade BBQ Sweet Potato Chips

Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite vegetables!  I love the traditional casserole during the holidays, eating them “candied” as my mom used to fix them, roasting or grilling them, or any other way.  However, this is now one of my most favorite sweet potato recipes ever!

Making homemade potato chips isn’t something that you want to do just every day, but for special occasions it is TOTALLY worth it!  It is a little time consuming, but worth all the effort!  The chips themselves are super crisp and delicious, but this BBQ spice mix really makes them incredible!  The spice mix would be amazing on anything that you might want to add a dry rub BBQ sauce on.  It tastes very much like the flavor of great BBQ chips from the store.  Amazingly good!

Ingredients:

  • 2 large sweet potatoes, ends chopped off
  • Oil for frying
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1/2 tablespoon garlic salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper

Directions:

Add oil to a large pot and heat over medium high heat.

In a bowl, combine paprika, onion powder, brown sugar, garlic salt, chili powder, salt and pepper.

Peel and slice sweet potatoes as thin as possible using a mandolin or a very sharp knife.

Add chips in batches (don’t over crowd pan)to the hot oil, frying for 4-5 minutes at a time, using a large slotted spoon to turn the chips over while frying.

Once chips are golden and crispy, remove and place on a rack that is set over a cookie sheet to drain.

After about 30 seconds, sprinkle with the homemade BBQ seasoning and toss well to coat.

Let cool completely. Make sure chips aren’t piled on top of each other so they can cool and crisp up.

Serve immediately!

Yield:  Enough for 2 chip lovers or 4 dainty people! 🙂
