I don’t know very many kids (or adults for that matter) who don’t LOVE macaroni and cheese. And why wouldn’t they? It’s pasta. It’s creamy. It’s cheesy. It’s just the perfect comfort food! It can be served with hamburgers at a cookout or with a formal holiday dinner. It’s not just a great side with a meal, but it is great all alone for lunch.
I have experimented with different recipes throughout the years and this is one of my two favorites. This one is baked, while the other is just made on the stove top. I’ll make and post the other one in the future.
There’s no comparison between homemade mac & cheese and the kind out of a box. If you have never made it from scratch, you must try it! You won’t want to go back!
Golden Macaroni & Cheese
- 1 (16 ounce) package elbow macaroni or shells
- 4 cups milk
- 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons salt
- 2 (10-ounce) blocks sharp cheddar cheese, shredded and divided
- 1/2 cup soft plain breadcrumbs
- 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted
Cook macaroni according to package directions; drain well. Set aside.
Combine milk, flour, and salt.
Stir together flour mixture, 3½ cups cheese, and macaroni.
Pour macaroni mixture into a lightly greased 9×13 baking dish or 2 (11 inch) oval baking dishes.
Sprinkle evenly with breadcrumbs and remaining cheese; drizzle evenly with melted butter.
Bake at 350 °F for 35-45 minutes or until golden brown.
